TEAK WOOD
History
The durability of teak wood was already discovered centuries before by the native tribes in Southeast Asia and they used it to build their tribal houses, tools, furniture and even as medicine. Even more their fisherman highly valued the properties of teak and used it for their ship floorings and frames.
In the 17th century the Dutch colonized Indonesia and quickly realised that teak wood is an excellent wood for building ships. From there on it made its way out to the whole world and was mostly used for outdoor and marine environments.
Since Indonesias' post-colonial era in the mid 20th century the government took its teak production very serious like no other country to manage and protect nations' most valuable natural resource. All teak forest are controlled by the government and each felled tree is replaced with a new one. There are very strong regulations for cutting, processing and exporting teak wood and we at POPPOU make sure to meet all of them.
WHAT MAKES TEAK SO SPECIAL?
Teak is one of the most expensive but also one of the highest quality woods in the world. The reasons for this are its natural quality characteristics which makes it so valuable. Teak possesses an abundance of natural oils and rubber locked right into the grains of the wood which makes it very strong and durable. Because of this teak has greater natural weather-resistant properties than any other wood. Drying it to a proper moisture level (~10%) makes teak waterproof and protects it from dry rotting. On top of that the oils and rubber safeguard it from damaging pesticides and fungi. Therefore teak wood does not need any extra treatments for protection.
This all makes teak wood the perfect material for outdoor furniture (and with its beauty also for interiors). In the beginning it has a rich beautiful honey brown color fading over time into an elegant patina grey that makes it stand out from other outdoor lumbers like pine or ceddar. Furniture made from teak are strong and will last you for a very long time. There are centuries-old teak benches in british parks made from dismantled ships which is proof of how durable teak wood is. They will probaly last for a life-time and one day maybe you are even able to give them to your grand childrens.
WHY POPPOU ONLY USES GRADE A - TEAK ?
Teak wood is a very fast growing tropical hardwood which still needs up to 40 years to fully mature and be ready to harvest. It is availably in three different quality grades (A, B and C) which are based upon the quality, the age and the parts used from the log.
Grade A teak is the highest possible quality and refers to the timber taken from the center (heart) of a trunk of a fully mature tree. It will have a high concentration of the natural oils and rubber which play the key role in its outstanding resistance. A grade teak is incredible uniform in color, finish and hardness with a very small allowance for knots and discoloration. This top grade wood fits perfectly for extreme environments like marine industry and boat decking aswell as outdoor furniture and floorings.
Grade B teak is used from the outer section of the center and is known as immature hartwood. It has a lot more knots and color variation and crucually it contains a lot less of the natural oils and rubber. Therefore it is not able to withstand the exposure of harsh weather conditions without protective treatment.
The grade C teak wood is a lot cheaper compared to grade A but also lacks all the benefits it offers. It is only used for local furniture production and has only a very low life span.
For that reasons we from POPPOU will only provide our costumers with the highest possible quality to ensure that your furniture keep its beauty and durability for a long period of time.
